Boycott “Split.”

This is a horror movie that’s not out yet but just seeing the trailer really pissed me off. The trailer basically described a movie about this mentally ill man that kidnaps these girls and its heavily implied he’s going to kill them. The man is said to have a ‘personality disorder’ (It’s not actually a personality disorder it’s been reclassified as Dissociative Identity Disorder) and that alone already gives people the impression mentally ill people are dangerous. However, they go on to say that the man has 23 different personalities, which the woman diagnosing him claims that she’s “never seen a case like this” when in reality there are people recorded to have many more identities than this, and someone treating DID would know this. Overall, the movie really portrays the symptoms wrong and it’s another movie that demonizes mentally ill people. Please save your money and see another movie.

Normally I wouldn’t reblog stuff like this here, but please don’t see this movie. Dissociative Identity Disorder is so misunderstood to where it’s constantly played off to be faked/made up, so “rare” you would never meet anyone with it (it’s actually about as common, if not more, than schizophrenia or autism, but misdiagnosis and stigma even in the medical field is rampant), or in the case of this movie, portraying those with DID like dangerous killers.

I’m appalled that it’s almost 2017 and we have a movie like this coming out when DID gets so little recognition that this is just really dangerous misinformation to spread, for not just mentally ill folk, but those with DID specifically.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is not a personality disorder (and referring to it as multiple personalities is incorrect), but a Dissociative disorder that develops in childhood when repeated trauma causes a child to be unable to integrate a singular sense of self. New alters form in response to a stressful/traumatic situation. Titling the movie “Split” is even more horrific because it’s using a term specifically used to refer to when an individual with DID undergoes enough trauma/stress to have to split a new alter to survive as a horror movie title portraying alters as dangerous.
