Please stop staying that you don’t care what happens to red states. That they deserve to crash and burn because “they asked for it”.

Women who need abortions still live there. LGBT teenagers still live there. Poor people still live there. Immigrants still live there. They do not deserve to hear that the whole world hates them and wants to see them rot because of what some people in their state did.

It is the same logic as “people in Afghanistan deserve what they get because they happen to live in proximity to terrorists”. It is the same damn thing and I do not buy that it’s different or better this time.

Vulnerable people in those states need our help now more than ever. They are not guilty by association. Stop it.

The people who voted for Trump also don’t deserve to crash and burn.

Agreed. I sincerely hope that we can bring them into the fold of a functional society. I’d rather change their minds than leave them to rot.

As someone who lives in a (very blue dot in a) red state, thanks! Also if you want to help out marginalized people in red states, there are a few specific organizations you can donate to to do that. For example:

  • The Lilith Fund: funds abortions in Texas for people who cannot afford it, especially for poor Latinas
  • Campaign for Southern Equality: fights for LGBTQ rights and against unjust laws in Southeastern states, has specifically been heavily involved in the fight against McCrory’s agenda in North Carolina
  • Equality NC: another LGBTQ rights group in North Carolina that’s been heavily involved in fighting against anti-LGBTQ discrimination there
  • State and regional chapters of groups like the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, etc. that are located in red states
  • State Democratic parties in red states (the Texas Democrats have some pretty cool merch you can buy!)
  • I’m looking for some immigrant-focused organizations located in places like Arizona and Texas that I’ll add to this post later. On that note, though, there were some silver linings on that issue in those states: Maricopa County, AZ ousted their infamously xenophobic sheriff Joe Arpaio. Here in Travis County, TX, we elected as sheriff Sally Hernandez, who promises to make Austin a “sanctuary city” by refusing to comply with federal immigration officials in deporting undocumented people here.

Thank you! Very helpful.
