PAY ATTENTION. This is the GOP developing a plan to fully legitimize Islamophobia. They are NOT trying to find the tiny minority of people in this country who are supporters of ISIS. They are trying to justify a widespread movement to demonize ALL Muslims.
The GOP is doing this because they know the only way they can stay in power is if they can make us afraid of an “other” and get us to believe that they are the only ones who can protect us from that “other.”
READ UP on the 1950s McCarthy era that sought to use fear to control the American public under the guise of uncovering Communists and Communist “sympathizers.” The GOP is gearing up for a full-on McCarthy-style persecution of Muslims. That persecution will result in the imprisonment and death of countless people.
And just in case you think that because you are not Muslim you won’t be affected, think again. All people who express support towards Muslims will run the risk of blacklisting or even imprisonment unless they “name names” of people that they “suspect” of being “sympathetic” towards ISIS. There will be those who will name someone that they know has no ties to terrorism, just to save their own neck. And so the cycle of Government-sponsored suspicion and violence will continue.
The GOP is trying to manipulate us to turn against our Muslim neighbors and friends. Just like with McCarthyism, they realize that if they can convince enough people of the “threat” of radical Islamic terrorism, and if they can combine that with the fear of blacklisting or imprisonment for refusing to name names, they can recruit us as unwitting operatives, effectively getting us to do their work for them.
We must fight back against this persecution. We must stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters, now more than ever. The GOP will try to tear us apart, but we must not let them. Just like in the McCarthy era, history will not be kind to those who name names. Stand up. Speak up. Act up. Fight back.
