i am eternally disappointed in most discussion of angels in a more paranormal context, because its always lovenlight angel healing stuff and/or near death experiences with blonde white humans appearing but NEVER ppl talking about seeing flaming wheels covered in eyes and the like

this is because in the 5th century, Pseudo-Dionysus the Areopagite wrote a manuscript titled “The Celestial Hierarchy”, in which he detailed the order of heaven.

influenced by popular dualistic gnostic & zoroastrian thought, he sorted the supernatural beings of the Christian world into categories of purely good & purely evil. before this point, the nature of early Christian supernatural beings was supposed to simultaneously good & evil (thus their frightening appearances, thus existence of angels who tempt, thus a fickle God who wields fire that begins & ends).

the way angels appear in our myths, art, & psyches has been molded by those Ps. Dio influenced, to whom angels could now only manifest as beings of pure benediction. you can read plenty more online, Ps. Dio’s treatises are pretty readily available on sacred-texts.com.

…you just answered a question that i was literally just thinking about asking but hadnt asked yet…spooky

thats interesting tho, thanks for the info ill have to read up on that

Huh. I have only ever encountered the more original, drastically more terrifying kind of angels. They’re like cosmic machines made out of fire and words and voices, barely restrained behind ‘human’ appearances and I understandably nope the fuck off.

But you never really hear people talking about it. Usually if I do someone comes and tries to correct my view on angels and look, seriously, I know what I saw, maybe that’s not how they appear to (hypothetical) you but if they don’t need to look nice, in my experience, they don’t bother, and they don’t with me at least.

Yeah the flufflight angels have gotten really popular with the new age movement and onward, and some people want to insist they only appear one way because often they’re taught/assume that if you sense anything different calling itself an angel, it is AN INSIDIOUS TRICK BY THE ENEMY. It’s a very narrow narrative to fit the whole world in.

My sense of angels is usually “hey! An absolute infinite being of… absoluteness, act cool, try not to panic, you got this.” Visuals are all over the place. My art usually depicts them humanish-looking because that’s typically how my art is style-wise, but art of them from me is much rarer than demon art because frankly, angels are really hard to concentrate on and render and often don’t really want art from me anyway, so I don’t force the issue.

But there’s a lot of different beings that get “angel” classification by people so that can really confuse things. I like seeing this sourcing on when things got so flufflight in Christian angel thought, though.

I always get stuff like Hubble imagery made of nanomachines, (the ability to observe without beginning or end, made manifest as conflagrations of eyes), cosmic fire made of consciousness, and void that hides the unwitnessable. Real cosmic, alien, horror.
