hellenic-polytheism-things:

garrisonbabe:

i always have to remind myself not to listen to people who do greek god makeup or some other artistic interpretation when they start talking about the mythology. like this guy on youtube did a pretty bangin’ haides makeup halloween look but he was talking about his color choices and he said “y’know haides was a god then he was cast out so he’s not divine anymore” and i had to pause the video to sigh and put my face in my hands

listen to me, friends:

HAIDES IS IN NO WAY EQUIVALENT TO LUCIFER/SATAN/THE DEVIL

once more, just for good measure

HAIDES IS NOT AT ALL SIMILAR TO THE CHRISTIAN CONCEPT OF THE DEVIL

here’s a thing to read in case you decide you wanna write or talk about haides ever in your life

haides got the underworld as his kingdom because he drew lots with his brothers zeus and poseidon. they divvied up the world into portions and zeus got the heavens, poseidon got the sea, haides got everything under the earth

btw this also makes haides a god of wealth because he’s god over the earth and all the hidden riches inside. from nutrients that make plants flourish to gold and precious gems. people usually called him plouton because of this.

dude named his dog spot. okay? he is not your antagonist who wants to destroy everything zeus does or builds yada yada (that would never work anyway zeus is pretty damn terrifying when you get down to it). haides guards the dead, he protects their right to due burial, he’s known as the giver of wealth and the receiver of all. he’s not a god to be avoided or feared any more than any other hellenic deity. he was not “cast out” of olympus like wtf he’s a king. i’m just.

if you’re going to look at another religion or culture you need to remove the biases of your upbringing if you ever want to actually understand them. for a lot of us in the western world this means forgetting protestant christian standards that dictate the good/evil dichotomy because very few religions outside the abrahamic sphere are going to adhere to that narrow standard.

anyway, the site i linked above is fantastic if you wanna read about the ancient greek gods for writing purposes or any other purposes, i highly recommend theoi.

yes preach bitch preach
